Apple macOS / iOS

Method 1 (preferred) using Apple Mobileconfig.

Email (optionally also address book and calendar) can be installed automatically on Apple devices using a configuration profile. To install this profile, follow these steps:

  1. Invoke the Mailix UI in a browser on the device on which you want to set up the mailbox.

Your Mailix UI can be accessed at the URL https://mailadmin.YOUR-DOMAIN-NAME/.
YOUR-DOMAIN-NAME will be replaced by your own domain name. If your domain name is example.com the URL will be https://mailadmin.example.com.

  2. Log into the Mailix UI with your mailbox access IDs.
Your e-mail administrator has given you the access data. If you are the email administrator of the domain, use the email address of the mailbox you have set up as the username and the password you have chosen for the mailbox.

IMPORTANT: If the Mailix UI does not display the login screen first, but you are already directly in the Mailix UI after accessing the page, you will need to log out at the top right and log back in as the mailbox user whose mailbox you want to set up.

  3. After successful login, you will see “Apple connection profile” and “Apple connection profile with app password” sections on the bottom half of the first page.
    Choose between these two options.
    a) With “Apple connection profile” you get a profile where you have to enter your mailbox password additionally when activating the profile on your Apple device (and you always have to change it at the device also, after you’ve ever changed your mailbox password).
    b) With “Apple connection profile with app password” you get a profile for which a so-called “app-specific” password is automatically created. This will work fine as long as you use your Apple device or do not delete the app-specific password here in Mailix UI.

  4. In the area selected in step 3 you can now choose whether your connection profile should only contain email (IMAP and SMTP) or also calendar and address book (CalDAV and CardDAV).
    Click on the desired link.

  5. The connection profile will be downloaded. Depending on the browser used, the profile will be immediately included in the system settings of your Apple device or saved in the download folder as a file with the extension “.mobileconfig”. If the file was only saved, click 2x on the file name in the download folder to open the profile and include it in the system settings of your Apple device.

  6. Go to the system settings of your Apple device to the profile management.
    a) For iPhone, iPad the way is “Settings” > “General” > “VPN and Device Management”.
    b) For macOS the way is “System Preferences” > “Profiles” (this section will be created only after you get the first profile).

  7. Install the profile you just downloaded.
Depending on your Apple device, the “Install” function is located either in the upper right or lower left corner. Depending on the profile, installation may require one or more steps. For example, it may require entering the mailbox password, computer password, or iPhone/iPad PIN. In any case, perform all steps until the end of the installation process.

  8. Your new mailbox is installed and usable on your Apple device.

The Mailix UI is a multi-function interface. Both mailbox owners and domain administrators can log in there and see different content and features.
If you are logged in as domain administrator, you cannot download a connection profile of a mailbox. You have to log out on the top right and then log in again as a mailbox owner with the mailbox’s credentials.
Alternatively, as a domain administrator you can go to the list of configured mailboxes in the Mailix UI and press the “Login” button in the line of the respective mailbox. Then you are directly in the selected mailbox UI without further login and can download the connection profile. If you then log out again in the upper right corner, you are back in the domain administrator UI. There you can click on “Login” at another mailbox and repeat the whole process.
This is a good way to go if you want to set up more than 1 mailbox on your device.

Method 2 (Exchange ActiveSync emulation)

On iOS, Exchange ActiveSync is also supported as an alternative to the procedure above. It has the advantage of supporting push email (i.e. you are immediately notified of incoming messages), but has some limitations, e.g. it does not support more than three email addresses per contact in your address book. Follow the steps below if you decide to use Exchange instead.

  1. Open the Settings app, tap Mail, tap Accounts, tap Add Acccount, select Exchange.
  2. Enter your email address and tap Next.
  3. Enter your password, tap Next again.
  4. Finally, tap Save.
